Interview with BOME
I’ve always liked the work of manga artist Hiroyuki Utattane, an exclusive manga artist in the world of coterie magazines. In particular, I thought I’d like to recreate his Oni Musume in three dimensions and color. The picture was used on the cover of a collection of Utattane’s works, and is actually an independent illustration with no real connection to the rest of the contents of the book. But there was something about it that made me want to do it in 3D.
Most of the time when I make figures of anime characters, details get sacrificed as a result of limits inherent in drawing animated art. But these illustrations are independent from the anime, and I was attracted by the attention to detail and ornamentation they displayed – you could tell the artist was enjoying himself when he was making them. But precisely because they are single illustrations, it is difficult to render them faithfully as three dimensional figures because of the lack of sufficient source materials.
For this piece, which was publicized once as a garage kit model, I was intrigued by the chance to make a relatively minor anime character available as a figure to a wider market, where ordinary people would have a chance to buy it. It would be great if there was a feedback effect from the figure, so that more people were able to learn about Utattane’s manga. That’s another reason I’d like to keep producing a series of figures based on characters that may not yet be famous, but for whatever reason made me think ‘Hey!’
