K-On! is premiering 16 March 2010, airing Tuesdays 8pm

In her first year at high school, Yui Hirasawa is searching for a club to join. At the same time, drummer Ritsu and her bassist friend Mio are trying to save the school’s pop music club from being closed down due to a shortage of members. Managing to recruit Tsumugi to play the keyboard, they need just one more member to allow the club to continue running.

Unable to even read sheet music, Yui joins thinking she will play the castanets, the only instrument she can play, while the other three girls think she is a guitar prodigy… Comedy ensues as the trio helps Yui learn to play the guitar, with the four eventually making a great girl band in time to play at the school’s festival.

From Harajuku’s cutting-edge vibe to Ginza’s ultra-upscale style, the streets of Japan’s urban centers have always been a virtual catwalk for its trendy residents. And on February 27, 2010, Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM), and SM Supermalls, SM Mall of Asia, invite you to experience Japanese street fashion for the 2010 Nihongo Fiesta.

The Street Fashion Exhibit

The 2010 Nihongo Fiesta, which promotes international cultural and arts exchange between Japan and the Philippines, will feature the Japanese and Filipino Street Fashion Exhibit and Contest. While it will put on display the trends shown off on the streets of Tokyo courtesy of the Japan Fashion Association, the photo exhibit will also present Manila’s own take on street fashion through the watchful eyes of Filipino fashion designer and style blogger Cecile Zamora Van Straten (chuvaness.livejournal.com) with Jujiin Samonte (www.jujiin.com) , and curated by the premier Philippine graphic design studio, Team Manila. Expect an experience that envelops not only fashion but also the dynamic modes of expressions of youth lifestyle in design and technology.

So, whether you find Tokyo and Manila street fashion similarly fabulous or at opposite ends of the style spectrum, get your dose of trendy Tokyo and Manila from the Japanese and Filipino Street Fashion Exhibit on the following dates: February 22 to 28 at the Main Mall Atrium of MOA; March 1 to 8 at The Block, SM City North EDSA; and on March 9 to 15 in Megamall Atrium, Mandaluyong City.

The Street Fashion Contest

While every devotee of fashion is invited to check the exhibit in their street style best during the culmination of the Nihongo Fiesta on February 27, those who want a chance to win two roundtrip tickets to Osaka, Japan courtesy of leading Philippine economy airline Cebu Pacific, should join the Japanese and Filipino Street Fashion Contest.

There are two ways of joining: send application online or drop by during the Nihongo Fiesta. Online applications are recommended as only limited applications will be accepted. Send a whole body photo garbed in stylish street wear with your name, telephone number, mobile number and address to email@jfmo.org.ph or kpique@jfmo.org.ph. You can also simply show up in your best street wear, register at the Street Fashion Booth at the Main Mall Atrium of MOA, print your photo from your Bluetooth or wi-fi enabled mobile phone or USB through HP Photo Smart Printer to be posted on the Street Fashion Wall of Fashionistas courtesy of HP Philippines. Deadline for online submissions will be on February 24, until 5:00 pm; and on-the-spot registration will be accepted until 12:00 nn on February 27, the day of the contest. Qualified online applicants can go to the final round on February 27 dressed according to the photo they sent.

All chosen contestants will be judged and awarded on the same day; they need to be at the Main Atrium before 3:00 pm, wherein judging will start at exactly 4:30 pm. The 1st prize winner of the trip to Japan will also bring home P7,000 in cash; the second and third prize winners will also bring home cash prizes worth P5,000 and P2,500, respectively; a lucky fashionista will also receive an HP Special Award.

Aside from the Japanese and Filipino Street Fashion Exhibit and Contest, the 2010 Nihongo Fiesta will also feature a Nihongo Speech Contest and Quiz Bee, and a J-Rock Concert headlined by the influential punk-pop-rock band Shonen Knife with our very own dunk (dance and punk) band Pedicab.

All 2010 Nihongo Fiesta events are open to the public. For inquiries, contact JFM at (02) 811-6155 or email@jfmo.org.ph. The 2010 Nihongo Fiesta is made possible with the support of the Embassy of Japan, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), HP, Cebu Pacific, Team Manila Graphic Design, Dimensione, The Japanese Association Manila, the Association of Filipino Nihongo Teachers (AFINITE), SM The Block, SM Megamall, and media partners, Manila Bulletin, NU 1o7 and ClicktheCity.com.
