Those wanting to listen to live Koto music by a Japanese musician but can’t afford the plane ticket to Japan, here’s your chance to watch and listen to the real thing as renowned Japanese musician Chieko Fukuda will be playing the Koto or Japanese traditional stringed instrument/ harp at SM Mall of Asia Cinema 1 on February 28, 2009 7:30 pm.

Workshops: February 25-27, UP College of Music, Diliman, Quezon City Ms. Chieko Fukuda, a renowned Japanese musician playing the koto or Japanese traditional stringed instrument/ harp, will hold a series of performances in Manila in February in her capacity as a Special Advisor for Cultural Exchange by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
A 3-day workshop with the UP College of Music has also been programmed to set off her performances, culminating in a show-recital featuring Ms. Fukuda and the participants of the koto workshop.
Ms. Fukuda studied koto from her father,Tanehiko Fukuda , from childhood and made her first stage appearance at age three. After completing the NHK Traditional Music Training Program, she studied as a Domestic Arts Student of the Agency of Cultural Affairs in 1988. She began holding concerts in 1992 , and has since continued to perform live stages, TV and radio, in Japan and in other parts of the world. Ms. Fukuda was awarded the Arts Festival Prize by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1993 for her 2nd recital and gained public attention as the youngest prizewinner in history. Awarded the Arts Festival Superior Prize from the Agency of Cultural Affairs for 6th recital, her reputation for the arts of classical styled Koto as young player was stabled in this time. At present, she is the Director of the Nihon Sankyoku Kyokai and Ikutarya Kyokai, as well as Headmaster of Mitsunonekai. While primarily a classical music player, Ms. Fukuda also collaborates with a rock musician, DEMON KOGURE.
